This poetry on alcohol is a take from a teetotaler who is surrounded by friends, family who enjoy their drink. I have been cajoled many times to take a sip, however the drinking alcohol is an activity that doesn’t look attractive to me. I have made a conscious choice to be a teetotaler so I see a lot of people around who feel they are in control even when they are in an inebriated state. The lines below are a take on some of those situations which I have witnessed. I feel as if they are handcuffed by alcohol and it is the alcohol controlling them, instead of them controlling the alcohol.

मैंने देखा है लोगों को करीब से
शराब पी कर भटकते हुए ज़मीर से
कोई बेवजह औरों से लड़ता है
कोई औरत पर हाथ उठाकर मर्द बनता है
कोई घर बैठे पी कर बस थकान दूर करता है
कोई डूब कर दिल खोलने का हौंसला करता है
कोई गाड़ी से ज़िन्दगी रौंद देता है
कोई आबरू का शिकार कर के दिल भरता है
कोई ख़ुशी मनाने के बहाने जाम भरता है
कोई ग़म का जाम किसी के नाम करता है
कोई ज़्यादा पीने से खुद ही मरता है
कोई जुए में सब कुछ गिरवी करता है
मैंने देखा है लोगों को करीब से
उन्हें भी, जो कहते हैं खुद को अलग, इस भीड़ से
