‘That perfect spot on the beach’: A poetry

That perfect spot on the beach is a poetry that captures my feelings while I spend time with myself, as I locate that quiet and secluded spot on a beautiful beach!

I penned ‘That perfect spot on the beach’ last week while enjoying my vacation. It was a solo trip, a first since 2014 when I last travelled across countries in Europe.

I started writing way back in 2006 but my commitment and focus towards writing all these years was at best inconsistent. This year, I have fully embraced my identity as a writer – I am someone who loves to write and express my feelings through words. Consequently, I have been writing and publishing consistently for the last 7 months and a paper and pen accompany me most of the times. This allowed me to capture my thoughts while I sat in a secluded spot on the beach.

I travel a thousand miles to find,

that perfect spot on the beach

–

to meet a part of myself,

that otherwise feels difficult to reach

–

I look at the waves with wonder,

perhaps they have a lesson to teach

–

keep flowing where the wind takes you,

don’t care about what they preach

–

What do I yearn for though,

Is a wall I struggle to breach

–

I keep looking within and outside for,

that perfect spot on the beach

Kavita: वो चाहते हैं

This hindi Kavita ‘वो चाहते हैं’, explores the emotion of Anger and watches it transform into pursuit of excellence.

Love evokes unparalleled emotions and is often an inspiration for the ink to transform itself into words on paper. However, revenge, anger, pain and jealousy etc. are equally powerful emotions and have the power to lend themselves as an inspiration for a compelling piece of poetry. This hindi kavita ‘वो चाहते हैं’ is powered by one such emotion, Anger!

Anger, when it continues to accumulate can become volcanic, waiting for an outburst which once triggered can annihilate anything that comes in its way! In contrast, in this Kavita ‘वो चाहते हैं’, the anger transforms itself into a powerful energy which propels the engine of hard-work and pursuit of excellence.

वो चाहते हैं

वो चाहते हैं हम सर
झुकाकर उन्हें सजदा करें
हम नहीं चाहते की हम
उन पर ये रहम करें

रुतबा ऊंचा है उनका
उम्र में भी हमसे बड़े हैं
जनाब हम भी मुश्किलों से
लड़ कर ही आगे बढ़े हैं

बात सुनो हमारी जो कहता हूँ
वैसा करो वो कहते हैं
हुक्म की तरह कहा माना हमेशा
नज़रअंदाज़ फिर भी क्यों करते हैं

अच्छा नहीं लगता उन्हें हमसे
अब शिकायत भी वो करते हैं

Monsoon Poetry: बारिश का मौसम

As we savor pakodas in the monsoon rain, innocently oblivious to our surrounding, this poetry highlights the dichotomy of events around us.

It’s monsoon season in India and monsoon is often associated with the quintessential pakodas (fritters) and Chai. For most people in India, Pakodas in the rain is the first thought that crosses the mind. This monsoon season, as the thought of crispy pakodas occurred to me, simultaneously several other thoughts got triggered which lent themselves to the poetry below. As we savor pakodas in the monsoon rain, innocently oblivious to our surrounding, this poetry is a reminder of the dichotomy of events and situations facing us today.

बारिश का मौसम

चलो पकोड़े बनाओ साथी
बारिश का मौसम आया है

–

खबर मिली है बाड़ में
किसी ने अपना घर गवाया है

–

कहीं डूब गयी फसल पानी में
तो कहीं सूखे का घना साया है

–

इसी बीच धर्म की जल रही हैं मशालें
सैंकड़ों की मौत का मंज़र छाया है

–

कहीं ख़ुशी मना रहे हैं उम्मीदवार
पंचायत के चुनावों का नतीजा आया है

–

घने बादल भी हैं और धुप भी है निकली
दुनिया की देखो कैसी अद्भुत माया है

English Rendition:

she left home early morning

and expressed itself on a erring person

I feel betrayed by my tears,

it then reverberated loudly

when it learning for losing a friend

it reached a stadium

and lent itself to the celebration

in the deep dark night

it saved a young girl from miscreants

the scream, it morphed itself to the benefit of people

before returning home exhausted

Wordplay: Can’t I Have it All?

This is a wordplay that reflects our feelings when we ponder over the meaning of life and look for sanity in world around us!

The busy’ness of life leaves us scrambing for time. Sometimes we ponder if this is how life is meant to be! We made life choices which have landed us where we are today. Although, some of those choices weren’t really choices, but the only options we had. This wordplay is a reflection of those feelings of churn that we experience, quite often, in the search for meaning, or in the quest of sanity! Life would have been much easier if only we could have our loved ones around us all the time, while we pursue our life’s goals. But, Can I Have it All?

I struggle to put words in a rhyme,

teach me how, I’ll give you a dime

–

Childhood indeed was a period sublime,

innocence could make up for any crime

–

Now work takes up all my time,

hours slips through like a slime

–

I am succeeding, ain’t that life’s objective prime,

my family isn’t with me, I meet them on facetime

–

Can’t I have it all, in one lifetime,

‘No Sir, You Can’t’, in a chorus they chime

This Kavita ‘मेरी ज़िन्दगी की किताब’ is an expression of a lover’s anguish after a broken relationship. An ambivalent feeling where one feels that they have lost it all and yet find the strength to overcome this feeling of loneliness.

English Rendition:

I felt lonely even when you were with me

Now that you are gone, It’s good that I don’t have that false hope anymore

I feel betrayed by my tears,

I have gone thorugh this earlier,

sadly, heartbreaks have become a part of my life,

even my pen knows my sorrow

and refuses to write about you anymore

It’s not easy to forget you my love

but moving on is the only option in life

I have told myself now, you are one page among hundred others

you aren’t the title of my book

This English poetry, ‘The Ladder of Pain’ is dedicated to the millions of women who lose their unborn child to miscarriage. I recognize that no words or language can meaningfully express the state of the women who experience this. ‘Ladder of Pain’ is an attempt to lend some words to the state of being at a hurtful juncture, however only partly so!

Here it goes, English Poetry: The Ladder of Pain

She climbed up a step,

on the ladder of pain

–

she lost a life within, yet unborn,

how could she be sane

–

thoughts engulf and consume her,

she keeps touching her belly, again and again

–

this ladder of pain has infinite steps,

she keeps climbing unable to stop and refrain

–

jump off this ladder without regret,

falling off sometimes is a gain

Note: I have been experimenting with different techniques and styles of writing. This theme of this poem is based on a poetry technique where you can use any object in conjunction with a noun to create a unexpected outcome. Some examples of this are topics like ‘The Candle of Lust’ or ‘Love of Books’ etc.

Hindi Kavita: तुम्हारी ख़ुशी में हम ख़ुश नहीं

This hindi Kavita is a take on that there are people around us, some of them celerbrate our achievements and a few others, not so much!

This hindi Kavita is a take on that situation which we wish not to experience but we often come across. There are people around us, some of them celerbrate our achievements and a few others, not so much! Instead they go quiet! That’s why, in Indian culture, it’s a saying that it’s not advisable to share your happiness with others before things completely get accomplished or finalized.

English Rendition:

I shared my happiness with them

I was surprised that instead of the wishes I expected

I got a deafening silence of jealousy

I have now learnt after this better experience

but I wish I had known it before

that the world around you feel jealous when you succeed

Motorbiking Diaries: Bangalore to Vatadahosahalli Lake

Looking for ideas for a weekned drive? A short motorbiking ride from Bangaore to Vatadahosahalli Lake is the just the right destination!

My early morning motorbiking ride from Bangalore to Vatadahosahalli lake was one of the most fascinating drives I have had in a while. Perfect weather, excellent road condition, breathtaking views in the journey and the destination made it an ideal weekend ride. A short ~200 Kms round trip from Bangalore was really a delight. The destination of this ride was Vatadahosahalli Lake located on Ramapatna road, ~90 Kms from Esteem Mall (Hebbal). Thanks to my friend Mayank, I was introduced to this wonderful destination which left me in awe.

My passion for Motorbiking:

For the last 15 years, motorbiking has been a part of my life. It all began when I bought the stylish Bajaj Pulsar 150 DTSi (black) in 2006. While I primarily used it for commute within the city, I also did a few memorable touring rides like Mysore to Bangalore back in 2011 and a couple of rides from Guna (Madhya Pradesh) to Kota (Rajasthan) during my time in central India.

In 2019, my long-cherished dream of owning a Royal Enfield came true when I bought Thunderbird 350x (red). Since then, I have been indulging in touring more frequently. My best ride has been a solo ride from Bangalore to Goa (2021). It fueled my fire and motivated me to become a part of an amazing and spirted motorbiking community in Bangalore. Over the last 18 months, some the rides I have done include Horsley Hills, Chikballapur, Mavathur, Chunchi, Mekedatu falls, Billigundlu boating points and Hogenakkal falls (a solo ride).

Journey to Vatadahosahalli Lake

We were a big group, around 10 bikes, 2 cars and 19 people. We started from Esteem Mall (Hebbal) around 6 am and reached the lake around 7 am. The ride was flawless! Imagine a cool breeze as a companion with stunning views around in an overcast weather, and a wide, empty, and smooth road inviting you to throttle and devour the distance.

On the way, around 10kms before the Vatadahosahalli Lake, is another large and beautiful lake called Bhairasagara lake. Initially, I thought it was our destination but what awaited us was even better.  

Vatadahosahalli Lake: A place worth visiting

This lake is a beautiful destination which instantly made me feel mesmerized! The lake is visible from the highway and is accessible easily through a convenient dirt path. Imagine a huge expanse of water held by a large mountain, as if proudly carrying a marvel of beauty in its arms. The feel of gentle waves on my skin, in the clean and warm water made me feel at peace. It was a place where I could sit for hours and just enjoy the serene view of the mountain, lake, and the wide-open sky.

After spending around an hour at the lake, hunger pangs drove made us reluctantly leave the place. I felt at peace, and yet craving for more. A destination like this is worth getting up at 4 am in the morning, even for a nocturnal being like me!  

Return to Bangalore

On the way back, a few scenic views lured me to stop and take pictures. Good food was the only missing piece and NH7 Refuel obliged us with hot Paranthas, Chana Bhatura and refreshing sweet lassi in jumbo sized steel glasses.

As usual, heavy traffic greeted us at Hebbal. This is the only part of riding which is not enjoyable. After a short detour to meet my friend, I reached home around 2:30 pm feeling happy about my day. I re-lived some of the beautiful scenes from the morning in my siesta.

A few tips:

  1. Start early from Bangalore, around 5 am would be perfect. You get empty roads on the onward journey and relatively less traffic on the way back.
  2. Consider taking some food to enjoy at the lake. Remember to carry back your trash!
  3. You could carry spare clothes if you fancy taking a dip in the clean water. Be careful as the water dips suddenly after the shallow entry point.  
  4. Final stretch of the journey is country roads with curves and occasional unmarked speed breakers. For safety, avoid speeding on that stretch.
  5. There are no toilets around the place, so consider carrying pee-buddy kits, especially for women and children.
